New Chairman and Vice Chairman Appointed by CANTO Board :

The Caribbean Association of National Telecommunication Organizations recently concluded its 106th Board of Directors meeting which was held on the 23rd of April 2010. The meeting was hosted by member Digicel Turks & Caicos at the Seven Stars Resort in Turks and Caicos.

The meeting focused on:

Mr. Dirk Currie, (TELESUR) CANTO Chairman

As a result of the resignation of the former Chairman Mr. Ian Blanchard, the CANTO board officially appointed Mr. Dirk Currie as the New Chairman of CANTO. Mr Currie, formerly Vice Chairman of CANTO, started his career in telecommunications in 1987 after having worked for the ministry of finance at the department of economic affairs for 6 years. In 1991, he was appointed as CFO of TELESUR (Suriname). Mr. Currie was appointed to the position of Managing Director of TELESUR in May of 2006 and holds this position to date.

Mrs. Karen Bevans (BTL) CANTO Vice Chairman

Mrs. Karen Bevans, Chief Operations Officer of Belize Telemedia Limited (‘Telemedia”) and Board Director of CANTO was also appointed to the post of Vice Chairman of CANTO at this meeting. Mrs. Bevans, who previously served on the CANTO Board as Vice Chairman from 2006 – 2007, joined Belize Telemedia on January 3rd, 1989 as an Administrative Officer. She became a member of the BTL Executive Management team when she was promoted to Manager, Administration, Human Resources and Public Relations in April 1993. Mrs. Bevans later assumed the position of General Manager of Marketing and Administrative Services in January 1999 and later in 2007, she was appointed as General Manager, Business Development and Marketing. In September 2009 Karen was appointed to act in the position of Chief Operations Officer and in February 2010, she was officially appointed as Chief Operations Officer, her current post.

The vacant post of Board Director will be filled by a Cable & Wireless representative and shall be announced at a later date. The next board meeting (107th) will be hosted by UTS during the 26th Annual Conference and Trade Exhibition (CANTO 2010) carded for 11th - 14th July, 2010 at the World Trade Centre, Curaçao.

End The Caribbean Association of National Telecommunication Organizations (CANTO) was founded in 1985 as a nonprofit association of telephone operating companies in the Caribbean. CANTO is now recognized as a major trade association in the telecommunication sector with 104 members in 31 countries. A Board of Directors appointed by the membership directs the policy strategy of the Association. This strategy is executed by the staff of a permanent Secretariat based in Trinidad and Tobago. /span>
