CANTO CELEBRATES 25TH ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Print E-mail

CANTO formerly observed its silver jubilee at the 25th Annual General Meeting held from the 25th -27th January 2009 at the Verandah Hotel, St John’s, Antigua and Barbuda. The premier meeting was co-sponsored by long standing members Cable & Wireless Antigua Ltd. and Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA). CANTO chronicled its 25 years from inception to present and addressed the theme –“Advancing the Caribbean through Information and Communication “.

Subsequent to the board elections, the following directors were appointed to the CANTO Board:

· Mr. Ian Blanchard, EVP Transformation , Cable & Wireless - Chairman

· Mr. Dirk Currie, Managing Director, TELESUR - Vice Chair

· Mr. Davidson Charles, EVP Leeward, Cable & Wireless Antigua - Treasurer

· Mrs. Glenda Medford, VP Legal, Regulatory & Public Policy, Cable & Wireless Barbados - Director

· Mr. Julian Wilkins, Head of Group Telecoms Public Policy, Digicel Trinidad & Tobago - Director

· Mr. Dean Boyce, Executive Chairman, BTL - Director

· Mr. Tellis Symonette, Vice President Wireless & Internet, BTC - Director

· Mr. Linus Rogers, VP Regulatory & Asset Rationalization, TSTT - Director

· Mr. Mario Hernandez Lopez, Director Central de Negociacion y Logistica, ETECSA - Director


The four CANTO working committees were attended by delegates and addressed the management and development of the respective areas in 2009.

The New and Emerging Committee will now be referred to as the Regulatory and Emerging Technologies and will focus in 2009 on:

· Regulatory principles documentation

· Spectrum costs review

· TV – explore how to secure content from USA

· Copyright infringement by customers – guidelines

The Communications and Marketing committees dealt with CANTO marketing strategies and policies and will concentrate on key responsibilities of CTC, WTISD, CANTO 2009, Training and Name Change in 2009.

The Human Resource Committee will focus on the planning and delivery of the following courses for the year 2009: 3rd Business Continuity Certified Training; Mini MBA in Telecoms, ICT Regulatory Training, the 3rd Human Resources & Best Practices Conference and the establishment of a Leadership Development Forum for Caribbean Business Leaders.

The Disaster Recovery Planning Committee will concentrate on the following:

· The Simulation Exercise Plan

· Business Continuity Planning Certified Training

· Earthquake Awareness Workshop

· Include Terrorism on the Agenda of the Human Resource Conference in Trinidad,

· Update Hurricane Plan and Database of Skills Set for CANTO

With Connect the Caribbean (CTC) on the forefront of CANTO’s Agenda, CANTO will address the following three action plans for 2009-2010 subject to final approval:

· Research, document and disseminate information on e-commerce best practise guidelines

· Research, document and disseminate information on e-government best practise guidelines

· Develop a regional ICT training facilitation programme

The panellists included the experts from the Telecommunications field such as: Phillip Cross of the ITU, Regenie Fräser of CANTO, Leon Williams - Telecoms Consultant, Selby Wilson - CTU Strategist and Carlton Samuel of CKLN.

In addition to the AGM, CANTO held a two day workshop from the 28th – 29th of January titled: The CANTO New Era Telecoms - Changing the Model Workshop. The informative workshop explored the market conditions for service convergence and the provision of multi play services. It also examined triple and quad play service offerings and the technologies which support these services. The workshop was presented by Alan Mayne of Informa Telecoms Academy, UK and was attended by over 25 delegates.

CANTO invites all to join us as we celebrate 25 years of Advancing the Caribbean through Information and Communication at the 25th Annual Trade Conference and Exhibition which will be held at the Hyatt Regency, Trinidad and Tobago from July 12th -15th , 2009 followed by the 3rd Annual HR & Best Practices workshop.
