Overview CANTO 2007
The Caribbean Association of National Telecommunication Organizations (CANTO) was founded in 1985 as a nonprofit association of telephone operating companies in the Caribbean. This initiative marked the first time that Caribbean operating companies had come together to address independently a wide array of telecommunication issues of mutual concern.
CANTO’s objective, then and now, is to establish a forum through which Caribbean Telecommunication Organizations may exchange information and expertise pertaining to the telecommunications field, generate inputs for orderly growth of the sectors, formulate policy and consider matters of mutual interest to its members.
Over the past twenty five years our membership has grown from eight members in eight countries in 1985 to 113 in 31 countries in 2009.
CANTO is now recognized as a major trade association in the telecommunication sector, not only in the region but also internationally. We partner with other organizations and projects such as CARICOM, CARICAD, CCAA, CITEL, CKLN, CTO, CTU, ECTEL, HIPCAR, ITU, ICANN and UWI.
The policy strategy of the association is directed by a board of directors appointed by the membership. This strategy is executed by the staff of a permanent Secretariat that is headquartered in Trinidad and Tobago. The association’s activities are financed through the contributions of the members.
CANTO views its roles in the Caribbean telecommunications community as those of leadership, in influencing policy; expert, in providing information in all aspects of the industry and facilitator, in encouraging dialogue and meaningful collaborative enterprise.
CANTO consists of a general assembly, a board of directors, and a Secretariat, headed by a Secretary General who is supported by an Operations & Human Resource Manager, Finance Manager and a Service Development Manager.
