CANTO ICT Regulation Workshop and Android OS Developer’s Training a Success!

March 14 - 18, 2011 proved to be a very eventful week for the Caribbean Association of National Telecommunication Organizations (CANTO). The Association conducted two major workshops simultaneously, namely:
CANTO ICT Regulation Workshop and the Android OS Developer’s Training in Trinidad.

The CANTO ICT Regulation Workshop commenced on the 14th and ended on the 17th of March at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. The workshop saw in attendance regional regulators, lawyers, ICT and telecommunications personnel. The training provided participants with an in-depth understanding of the current and emerging issues and challenges facing the telecommunications industry regionally and internationally. Emerging trends, current regulatory issues and regulatory finance were also focused on, given the many paradigm shifts to new networks and the need to develop customer centric solutions via the Operators. The regional legal perspective was facilitated by Glenda Medford out of Barbados.

The capacity building component was particularly enhanced with extensive interactions amongst participants who expressed a strong desire for similar workshops and forums planned, organized and conducted by CANTO.

Mr. Zain Khan, facilitator of the CANTO ICT Regulation Workshop remarked: "I am very pleased with the outcome of the workshop, having satisfied the desire for knowledge and dialogue by the participants. On behalf of Alliances Consultancy Group, I will like to thank CANTO for the opportunity to facilitate the workshop."

The Android OS Training on the other hand, commenced two days later, from the 17th -18th of March at the University of Trinidad & Tobago. This was also available via video conferencing to participants from St. Kitts, St. Vincent, and Suriname. The training was in direct support of the CANTO i-Create e-Content Competition; which aims to search out and reward the most creative and innovative e-content developers in the Caribbean region.

Android is a cutting-edge open source platform for mobile devices that has gained momentum in recent years. The CANTO training was designed to give potential and existing developers hands –on training to designing and building mobile applications. The training focused on the progression and opportunities available in micro application and utilized live webinar streaming session using online training software to provide these sessions for our Caribbean participants.

Mr. William Jordan , Account Director of Ericsson Caribbean – the platinum sponsor of the CANTO i-Create e-Content Competition and Android OS Developer’s Training, was excited with the roll out and outcome of the training. Mr. Jordan stated that "We at Ericsson are very excited about the opportunity to partner with CANTO and the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) to bring this Android workshop to the region. The workshop hosted at the UTT was a huge success. Ericsson strongly believes that mobile applications are an important driver of the data explosion being experienced today and this is supported by their vision of 50 billion connected devices by 2010".

Ericsson & Sony Ericsson also congratulated CANTO for its visionary leadership in bringing the i-Create Caribbean e-Content initiative to the region.
Mr. Jordan added: "Caribbean people want Caribbean content and it is important that we raise awareness within the local developer community to develop applications that are specific to our market needs. We share your vision and are truly honored for the opportunity to partner with CANTO to help make this vision a reality".
In addition, Ericsson will also contribute to the i-Create Caribbean e-Content competition with internship opportunities at Ericsson and mobile prizes.
Dr. Rodney Rambally, Associate Professor of the University of Trinidad & Tobago (UTT), one of the sponsors of the competition also took the opportunity to thank CANTO for getting UTT on board the i-Create competition bandwagon as a sponsor. UTT is an institution dedicated to utilizing cutting edge ICTs to impart knowledge to its students. Dr. Rambally views the competition as an opportune one, as it gives delegates an occasion to learn Android OS for current and future adaptation.
Both workshops were a resounding success with delegates being totally satisfied. CANTO will create user groups for each workshop to share best practices which will add even more value to the trainings.
