+ 1 (868) 329 4207 Delegates Embraced Technology for Economic Success at CANTO 2010 The World Trade Center, Curaçao came alive with the charged energy of CANTO 2010, the Caribbean’s premier telecommunications event for industry professionals, academics and regional governments. CANTO with the assistance of co-host United Telecommunication Services (UTS), delivered an event to remember. From the 11th -14th July 2010, the 26th Annual Conference and Trade Exhibition attracted close to 500 delegates in one of the largest complexes in the Caribbean- the World Trade Centre, located in the picturesque, hidden gem of the Caribbean, Curacao. The event which centered on the theme “Embracing Technology for Economic Success” delved into the role that ICT plays in facilitating new and existing technologies to enhance the customer experience for the development of the region. The keynote address at the opening ceremony was delivered by Mr. Emsley Tromp, CEO of the Central Bank of the Netherlands Antilles. Mr. Tromp concluded his address by underscoring the importance of ICT as a driver of growth in the knowledge-based economy. He reiterated that, ICT plays a crucial role in countries’ ability to recover from the recent economic downturn and believes that in the Caribbean, ICT could boost economic growth. However, he pointed out that certain institutional and economic weaknesses must be addressed in order to improve competitiveness and to make our economies more attractive for ICT investments. In this regard, regional cooperation is essential.

CANTO Position Paper Regulation and Emerging Technologies Committee Universal Access / Service CANTO recognises that Information and communication technology (ICT) is a key enabler of economic growth and can be used to bridge the digital divide. Universal service policy can therefore facilitate access in those areas where it would be uneconomic for a service provider to deliver service. Universal access refers to service at the individual or household level, whereas universal service is shared service or public ICT facilities. Initially the universal service obligation related solely to delivery of voice services but the current trend has been to extend the definition to include access to broadband services in unserved areas and service to the disabled, elderly and other marginal groups. CANTO is supportive of the need for countries to have a good telecommunications infrastructure and for access to be made available to all citizens, directly or through community centres or hubs. Policies must be flexible and allow for a variety of approaches to fit local circumstances to increase network roll out. |
