The old adage, “the third time is a charm” rang true for 17 year old Amenzee Amu of Belize who emerged number one in CANTO’s sixth annual WTISD essay competition.

CANTO and Soroptimist International of Port of Spain hosted a Women and Girls in ICT Interactive Workshop as part of the line up of activities to commemorate World Telecommunication Information Society Day (WTISD) carded for May 17th 2012. The workshop which was held on the 26th of April at the Bishops Centenary College for girls in Trinidad & Tobago focused on the increasing need for the proliferation of women and girls in ICT.

Well over 50 delegates from various segments of the Caribbean ICT sector attended the ITU/CANTO/CTU/CARICOM Secretariat Caribbean Preparatory Meeting for the Connect the Americas Summit. The meeting which focused on the theme of „Connecting the unconnected by 2015‟ was held from the 22nd – 23rd of March, 2012 at the Carlton Savannah, Trinidad & Tobago.

World Telecommunication Information and Society Day (WTISD) spearheaded by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) was observed on Saturday the 17th of May 2008. To commemorate this occasion the Caribbean Association of National Telecommunication Organizations (CANTO) based in Trinidad & Tobago held the 2nd annual essay competition dubbed:- CANTO 2nd Annual World Telecommunication Information and Society Day- Essay Competition under the ITU theme: “Connecting People with Disabilities: ICT Opportunities for All”. Students from the ages of 15 to 17 were invited to write a 600 word essay expressing the requirements, issues, recommendations and the like of the disabled in regards to ICT.
