  • CANTO joins Huawei and the Mexico Foreign Affairs Ministry to work together to provide opportunities for scholarships for women in 14 countries in the Caribbean region

[November 01, 2021] Huawei and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) in Mexico are calling for women across the Caribbean region to apply for the “1000 Talented Women” program, which seeks to promote female digital development and reduce the digital divide and gender gap in the region.

In the implementation of this program, Huawei will award one thousand scholarships with a value of more than $200,000 USD so that participants can partake of its offer of technologies certifications, such as the Huawei Certified ICT Associate (HCIA) International Certification.

Fourteen Caribbean countries are included in the call for the programme; these are – Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, St. Kitts/Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Lucia Suriname and Trinidad & Tobago.

Thirty (30) scholarships for women students, professionals, or academics will be available to each country.

The agreement between the SRE and Huawei contemplates a collaboration to contribute to the development of skills in technologies such as Data Communications, Artificial Intelligence, Storage, Internet of Things, Cloud Services, and Big Data, which are drivers of productivity and economic growth in the new digital age.

Regional ICT body, CANTO, is also working together with Huawei and the SRE to promote the scholarships throughout the region, particularly as the body has championed its Women in ICT initiative since 2014.

The call for applications, which will be open until November 11, 2021, is geared to women who have training or knowledge of physics-mathematical sciences, or ICT related engineering programs. The trainings will be conducted entirely online, in periods ranging from 6 to 20 hours, and will be taught in English.

In addition, Huawei will provide vouchers to take the HCIA level exams in the selected certification, as well as the platforms and the necessary training materials.

Candidates must apply by November 11, 2021 through the call for applications at following link: https://www.gob.mx/amexcid/documentos/huawei-sre-1-000-talentos-para-el-desarrollo-digital-de-america-latina-y-el-caribe-english?state=published  where they may also see the course details as well as a guide for application.
